I will be keeping it as a resource long after the semester is over. Having taught writing for many years, I'm tough on textbooks for freshman composition classes. This book, though, is great.I am particularly impressed that the authors follow their own advice on writing. The authors have made the text brief, scannable, and quick to navigate.

They give concise and useful definitions. They tell you exactly what to do, often in the headings. And in their prose, they show a lot of empathy for the average student. Their tone, throughout, is reassuring.I find the book easy to use, too. The authors help you skim through any chapter, because they provide frequent headings, bulleted and numbered lists, digests, color-coded tables, diagrams and callouts.Here are two examples of the simple but helpful design.1.

The sample essays appear on different color paper, so they stand out from the rest of the text.2. On the inside back cover, the authors list the WPA outcomes for first-year composition.essentially, the goals for the course.and show where each one is addressed in the text.Instructors, take a look. I am able to get certain books at a discount rate for my classes.Writing Today is my first rental but definitely not my last. The book came quickly, no damage or markings in the book.
