Slui Exe Application Error

Had a user who's PSU was dying, not to mention one of the RAM slots had already died limiting them to 4gb of memory. They use a fair amount of applications specific to them, so starting from scratch was gonna be a pain.Decided to attempt migrating their HDD and video card to a new machine. Since i didn't have another of the exact machine i did some research and identified another machine i had on hand with similar specs.Migration went through without a hitch, but a couple weeks later i get a call from the user stating that they are seeing the 'This copy of windows is not genuine' message on the desktop. While troubleshooting the machine, the 'Windows Activation' section was completely missing from Control Panel System and Security SystemAttempting to initiate windows activation via SLUI.exe failed with the error ' Windows Cannot access the specified device path or file.' The FixAfter reviewing multiple articles dealing with broken or hacked OEM SLUI.exe issues i got the idea to pull the old HDD from the donor machine and replace the SLUI.exe.Ran it, Immediately got the 'Activation Successful' windows and the desktop message disappears!Just did this today so fingers crossed the issue doesn't come back after a restartOriginal PC: Dell Vosotro 260OS: Windows Pro OEMDonor PC: Dell Optiplex 390OS: Windows Pro OEM.

Can the person just go through the activation and re-input the product key that came with the motherboard instead to make it right?Product key is much different than license.

Product keys are just used for activation and are generally accepted as proof that you own a license, whereas the license dictates what you can and cannot do and is the the thing that entitles you to use the software as long as you're within the licensing terms. Just because something activates doesn't mean it's legit or will keep working (this comes into play below).OEM license is tied to the original product key (W7 and below) or digital entitlement (W8 and above). The Windows 7 OEM License Agreement section 2a states (in case you want the official language).

MANDATORY ACTIVATION.Activation associates the use of the software with a specific computer. During activation, the softwarewill send information about the software and the computer to Microsoft. This information includes theversion, language and product key of the software, the Internet protocol address of the computer, andinformation derived from the hardware configuration of the computer. For more information, seego.microsoft.com/fwlink/?Linkid=104609. By using the software, you consent to the transmission ofthis information. If properly licensed, you have the right to use the version of the software installedduring the installation process up to the time permitted for activation.

Unless the software isactivated, you have no right to use the software after the time permitted for activation. This is toprevent its unlicensed use. You are not permitted to bypass or circumvent activation. If thecomputer is connected to the Internet, the software may automatically connec t to Microsoft foractivation. You can also activate the software manually by Internet or telephone. If you do so, Internetand telephone service charges may apply. Some changes to your computer components or thesoftware may require you to reactivate the software.

The software will remind you to activate ituntil you do.5. Validation verifies that the software has been activated and is properly licensed. It also verifies thatno unauthorized changes have been made to the validation, licensing, or activation functions of thesoftware. Validation may also check for certain malicious or unauthorized software related to suchunauthorized changes. A validation check confirming that you are properly licensed permits you tocontinue to use the software, certain features of the software or to obtain additional benefits.

The check may beinitiated by the software or Microsoft. To enable the activation function and validation checks, thesoftware may from time to time require updates or additional downloads of the validation, licensing oractivation functions of the software. The updates or downloads are required for the proper functioningof the software and may be downloaded and installed without further notice to you. Correct (Chris(Microsoft))So, I was aware Iwas entering a legal grey area. Circumventing Microsoft's EULA or angering thelicensing gods was not my intention. My actions were motivated more out ofcuriosity that anything else.

We utilize MS volume licensing, and haveavailable Windows xp-10 licenses. Generally we do our best to remain compliant, and if necessary I will re-image this machineI am currently inpossession of both machines and will useone of our volume licenses when/if redeploying the 260Here's a thought, for thoughts sake regarding installation and use rights.2. INSTALLATION ANDUSE RIGHTS.a. One Copy per Computer. The software license is permanently assigned to thecomputer with whichthe software is distributed.

Thanks for the additional info, but I think I the main part of MY concern was the licensing, and what device had what assigned. If you're telling me that BOTH devices had an OEM Windows 7 Pro license, then you're good from a licensing perspective. That is because the replacement PC also had an OEM Windows 7 Pro licensed assigned. If the replacement device had NO OS or didn't have rights to run Windows 7 Pro, then we'd be having a different conversation. From an imaging perspective, moving a hard drive from one PC to another is not typically done because of the licensing issues I mentioned above. I'm not sure what in Windows triggers a reactivation when you upgrade parts.

Generally speaking the OEM license lives and dies with the device. And if you want to read more on the licensing rules on this, I wrote a useful how-to here.

NoteIf you suspect that your issue is related to DNS, see. Should I back up KMS host information?Backup is not required for KMS hosts. However, if you use a tool to routinely clean up event logs, the activation history stored in the logs can be lost. If you use the event log to track or document KMS activations, periodically export the Key Management Service event log from the Applications and Services Logs folder of Event Viewer. If you use System Center Operations Manager, the System Center Data Warehouse database stores event log data for reporting, therefore you do not have to back up the event logs separately. Is the KMS client computer activated? On the KMS client computer, open the System control panel, and look for the Windows is activated message. Alternatively, run Slmgr.vbs and use the the /dli command-line option. The KMS client computer does not activateVerify that the KMS activation threshold is met.

On the KMS host computer, run Slmgr.vbs and use the /dli command-line option to determine the host’s current count. Until the KMS host has a count of 25, Windows 7 client computers cannot be activated. Windows Server 2008 R2 KMS clients require a KMS count of 5 for activation. For more information about KMS requirements, see the.On the KMS client computer, look in the Application event log for event ID 12289. Check this event for the following information:.

Is the result code 0? Anything else is an error. Is the KMS host name in the event correct?. Is the KMS port correct?. Is the KMS host accessible?. If the client is running a non-Microsoft firewall, does the outbound port have to be configured? On the KMS host computer, look in the KMS event log for event ID 12290.

Check this event for the following information:. Did the KMS host log a request from the client computer? Verify that the name of the KMS client computer is listed. Verify that the client and KMS host can communicate.

Did the client receive the response?. If no event is logged from the KMS client, the request did not reach the KMS host or the KMS host was unable to process it. Make sure that routers do not block traffic using TCP port 1688 (if the default port is used) and that stateful traffic to the KMS client is allowed. What does this error code mean?Except for KMS events that have event ID 12290, Windows logs all activation events to the Application event log under the event provider name Microsoft-Windows-Security-SPP. Windows logs KMS events to the Key Management Service log in the Applications and Services folder.

IT pros can run Slui.exe to display a description of most activation-related error codes. The general syntax for this command is as follows: slui.exe 0x2a ErrorCodeFor example, if event ID 12293 contains error code 0x8007267C, you can display a description of that error by running the following command: slui.exe 0x2a 0x8007267CFor more information about specific error codes and how to address them, see. Clients are not adding to the KMS countTo reset the client computer ID (CMID) and other product-activation information, run sysprep /generalize or slmgr /rearm. Otherwise, each client computer looks identical, and the KMS host does not count them as separate KMS clients. KMS hosts are unable to create SRV recordsDomain Name System (DNS) may restrict Write access or may not support dynamic DNS (DDNS). In this case, give the KMS host Write access to the DNS database, or create the service (SRV) resource record (RR) manually.

For more information about KMS and DNS issues, see. Only the first KMS host is able to create SRV recordsIf the organization has more than one KMS host, the other hosts might not able to update the SRV RR unless the SRV default permissions are changed. For more information about KMS and DNS issues, see. I installed a KMS key on the KMS clientKMS keys should be installed only on KMS hosts, not on KMS clients. Run slmgr.vbs -ipk. For tables of keys that you can use to configure the computer as a KMS client, see.

These keys are publicly known and are edition-specific. Remember to delete any unnecessary SRV RRs from DNS, and then restart the computers. A KMS host failedIf a KMS host fails, you must install a KMS host key on a new host and then activate the host. Make sure that the new KMS host has an SRV RR in the DNS database. If you install the new KMS host using the same computer name and IP address as the failed KMS host, the new KMS host can use the DNS SRV record of the failed host.

If the new host has a different computer name, you can manually remove the DNS SRV RR of the failed host or (if scavenging is enabled in DNS) let DNS automatically remove it. If the network is using DDNS, the new KMS host automatically creates a new SRV RR on the DNS server. The new KMS host then starts collecting client renewal requests and begins activating clients as soon as the KMS activation threshold is met.If your KMS clients use auto-discovery, they automatically select another KMS host if the original KMS host does not respond to renewal requests. If the clients do not use auto-discovery, you must manually update the KMS client computers that were assigned to the failed KMS host by running slmgr.vbs /skms. To avoid this scenario, configure the KMS clients to use auto-discovery. For more information, see the.
