Bannatyne Reading Program

New Zealand's falling literacy rates are due to poor teacher training. Ros Lugg 05:00, Dec 11 2017. The more successful countries also integrate reading and spelling, which in many.

I will list out some, but not all, of the reasons that every student successfully learns to read and write fluently with this program.

A. In this Bannatyne program, nothing is ever used by a student until the teacher has taught it thoroughly. For example; if a student is learning how to read and write the word “log”, he or she would have already had a class discussion on the word and any meanings the word has such as logging a forest or keeping a ship’s log. The student also would have previously learned the 3 lessons on the phonetics

and been thoroughly taught how to write the corresponding letters. So, by the time the word is introduced visually, the students know the word, its phonetics and how to write it making reading and writing an effortless process.

B. The basis for this program is enriched language learning. Discussion and communication are key and are used at the forefront of any lesson and/or activity. Students who are more socially adept show higher results in reading and comprehension as well as auditory closure because they’re constantly practicing the language, listening, speaking and learning from others.

C. The last reason (but maybe the most important reason) that all students are able to succeed with this program is that Dr. Bannatyne was able to regularize the orthography of the English language. I realize that this might seem meaningless to some and others might question the validity of it, or you might even wonder what it means. If you have the patience to read a little further I’ll explain it in short detail.

**Our English language is very irregular. It has many exceptions to the rule as we well know and teachers often revert to strict memorization of sight words to learn words that don’t fit our phonetic code because different letters often make different sounds at different times. Besides our vowels being ever so “naughty” as my teachers termed it when I was growing up, our consonants have soft and hard sounds, we have sounds achieved by 2 letters such as /sh/ and /ch/, and we have letters that are sometimes silent such as in the word “sign” where the g is silent. The English language is quite different from other languages where 1 symbol (letter) equals 1 sound at all times.

In the Bannatyne program everything is one-to-one, phoneme to grapheme

  • We use 17 colors to equal our 17 vowel phonetics
  • soft sounds have slightly modified letter shapes such as a tail at the end
  • digraphs (sh, ph, th, ch, etc.) have an underline
  • silent graphemes carry an asterisk above them

Students no longer have to guess or remember how to read letters and words by sight. That is why it is so easy for students to follow along and succeed. There’s no guess work to it and as students learn the words so that the meanings, phonetics and spellings come fluently, the modifications to the graphemes and the colors are quietly phased out of the program so that the students don’t even notice and learn to read the text the way it is naturally written. It’s brilliant and it makes teaching students how to read and write an easy, fun experience!
